Many Disciplines

Joining Disciplines

The Coordinated Science Laboratory is a pure, multidisciplinary laboratory where the best minds from more than a dozen disciplines meet.

Building on the strengths of their diverse backgrounds, CSL researchers collaborate on creative new ideas that address all levels of the IT world, including materials, devices, hardware and systems.

The Lab maintains testbed environments and network infrastructures for work in the following areas:

Computing Systems and Networks

  • Secure, reliable wireless and wireline systems
  • Adaptive and reconfigurable systems
  • Reliable computer architectures
  • Testing, benchmarking, and validation
  • Computers and operating systems

Decision and Control

  • Management and control of complex, large-scale networks
  • Decision, theoretic, and econometric models
  • Applications to aeronautical, power, and manufacturing systems
  • Robotics, multi-agent systems, sensor networks, and semi-autonomous systems

Circuits, Electronics and Surface Science

  • Low-power VLSI design
  • VLSI signal processing architectures, mixed signal design
  • Novel materials for electronics: fundamental understanding of growth and properties

Communications and Signal Processing

  • Communications theory and methods
  • Optical networks
  • Remote sensing and space-borne applications
  • Coding and cryptographic methods
  • Watermarking and digital fingerprinting
